Think quick: what are the three most widely recognized American miniature trains manufacturers? I bet you’ll remember them when I tell you. The answer is: “Lionel, American Flyer and Bachmann Trains”. You may not have known that Bachmann was American, but it is. And American Flyer was a creator not just a line of trains. Here’s the facts:

Lionel Trains:

Until the fifties Lionel was the front runner in the model training world. Lionel’s great marketing allowed it to outwit the competition. It was Lionel’s marketing campaign that placed model train tracks around Christmas trees. Their O [scale|gauge] trains which were one 48th the size of [regular|real world|actual] [trains|locomotives] ruled the roast up until the 1950’s when HO scale trains started to take over the market. Starting in the 60’s Lionel went through several ups in downs but is still around. Lionel O gauge is back and as hot as ever. Their great trains are well loved by all.

American Flyer:

We mostly recognize American Flyer trains as a line of trains now, but they were their own manufacturer until 1966 when they were bought out by Lionel. American Flyer originated in Chicago around 1900. They were bought out by A C Gilbert who also popularized the famous “erector sets” of the early 20thcentury. American Flyer is partly still so popular as a collectible today because it offered such a strong alternative to Lionel’s O gauge trains. Like Lionel these trains were produced largely in O scale until after World War II when they attempted to establish an S gauge train line that ultimately failed but that has remained American Flyer’s most popular trains. When Lionel bought American Flyer in 1966, they kept and refurbished much of the equipment. In the last ten years Lionel has started reissuing the most famous and popular of the American Flyer trains using the original manufacturing devices but updating the trains with new sound systems and 21st century quality controls.

Bachmann Industries:

This is actually the oldest of the three companies, founded way back in the 1830s but was the last of the three to enter the toy train business. Descendants of the original founders of the company, the Carlisle’s and the Bachmann’s, are still on the company board, though the company is now headquartered in China, not in Philadelphia. Bachmann rose up after WWII by marketing starter kits to a middle class audience. To this day Bachmann remains the leader in HO scale.

We now have more choices than ever before when it comes to the model train hobby. The Internet has opened whole new choices for model train hobbyists. You can choose from almost any scale and from any period of train at just the touch of button. The three American classics I have been discussing are really American treasures.

No toy train is better known than Lionel O Scale Trains. Baby boomers still recollect Lionel as the crème-de-la-crème of model trains. Oh those big hardware store display trains that hypnotized us as little guys and gals. Around Christmas the local hardware store would put one up and watch as it drew us all in like metal shavings to a magnet. Challengers like Bachmann and financial woes have long since undone Lionel’s supremacy, but the brand still carries a lot of its former cachet. Here’s some reasons why I believe it is still popular among avid model train fans:

It’s every thing to do with the O gauge: Part of the explanation why Lionel fell from grace in the post World War II era has to do with the scale of its locomotive. Lionel trains were usually in O gauge, but with the boom of model training in the 50’s more and more middle class model train hobbyists began to purchase trains for smaller spaces. O gauge trains are one 48th the size of real world trains and require an 8’ x 16’ space as a minimum. This was simply too big of a space requirement, so fans turned to HO scale which only required a 4’ x 8’ space. Lionel’s failure to adapt is what cost it and what makes its odd scale a real draw for enthusiasts these days.

Lionel’s long history makes it a model train lover’s favorite: Lionel’s many decades makes it a popular choice for collectors. The nostalgia that Lionel inspires in a lot of model train enthusiasts cannot be discounted. Long lost memories come clattering out of dark tunnels of the subconscious when you see one of these classic trains. Lionel’s trains seem never to break and so they’ve survived its lean years protected in craft and second hand stores.

You’ll find no lack of manuals and news items on Lionel: Lionel’s got its own little world of devoted enthusiasts including the rocker Neil Young. There are two types of books on Lionel. First, there are books that are specifically devoted to getting you going with model training using Lionel O gauge trains. Second, a ton of books mark the ups and downs of Lionel’s exemplary history.

Finally, Lionel is popular because they just made good trains: The value of these trains can simply not be understated! Larger than most other trains, they are ideal for detailing and decaling and weathering. The easy to work with scale of Lionel trains make it a favorite among people who love to paint and detail model trains. The scale is also a big aesthetic draw for hobbyist’s who value beauty. Lionel trains really stand out.

Regardless of the company’s finances, Lionel O gauge should be a model train stand out for the foreseeable future. Even if Lionel declares itself bankrupt, enthusiasts will continue to protect its historical trains. You can’t really miss with Lionel.

While toy model trains may seem, at first blush, to be purely kid’s stuff, those who are familiar with this hobby will immediately understand that it is nothing of the sort. This is largely more suited to the interests of “older kids” .Some of them are inappropriate for young children because they require a level of maturity and manual dexterity which is only available with some maturity. Many of these train sets can be quite expensive and are extremely detailed. When completed by the hobbyist, being such perfect replicas of their big brothers, these sets rival museum reproductions of the famous trains that at one time crossed our rails from Maine to California.

Several different size scales are the basis for toy model trains. The most common scale is HO, which corresponds to about .14 inches equaling 1 foot on a real train This size is popular for several reasons. {It is a happy medium between the “O” size trains more suitable for young people and the N, Z and T scale trains which are among the smallest on the market It nicely fills the space between the “O” It nicely fills the space between the “O” scale which is actually quite appropriate for the younger hobbyists, and the increasingly smaller N, Z and T scales which will be more suited to a more sophisticated or at least experienced builder}.This allows a hobbyist to lay an impressive amount of track in a small area and to enjoy assembling an intricate and accurate landscape through which the train can trave. And these little jewels can really move.

Toy model trains are powered by electric current. In most American models, this is a DC, direct current, flow which is much safer than the alternating current that emanates from wall sockets. In either case, it is applied after passing through the, a variable step-down transformer, which means it is safer because we are using a lower current than that we find in the wall The mechanisms which power these trains are incredibly simple. To go faster, one simply increases the amount of power being delivered to the train. To reverse the direction we are going, we just reverse the polarity in our control. And naturally, since we are train engineers and not electrical engineers, our control mechanisms are not marked in volts and amps, but for the direction we wish to go and the speed we wish to make.

Toy model trains are available in several different ranges of complexity. Ready-to-Run trains are the simplest and the best ways to get young people involved in the hobby. These trains are put together in the box and one simply assembles the track and gets them on their way.Next is the “Shake the Box” level of train sets, just a little bit more complex so that most people can easily assemble them and get some joy and a feeling of involvement in the assembly. “Craftsman” kits are the most complex. These are only appropriate for the most knowledgeable, and patient, model railroaders.

Toy model trains tend to be a hobby that’s picked up in childhood and carried on into adulthood. Older railroaders take great pleasure in carefully recreating in minute detail the trains of yesterday (and today) while younger hobbyists are more into the “fun” quotient and enjoying the “cool.”. These trains can be worth a good deal of money to collectors, especially for particularly rare types in proper working order.A really “done” layout is quite an inspiration when it is so perfectly crafted by scale to represent towns, bridges, depots, switching yards and countrysides. Once bitten by the model train railroad bug, it’s hard to forget it. But isn’t it great you won’t have to?

While toy model trains may seem, at first blush, to be purely kid’s stuff, those who are familiar with this hobby will immediately understand that it is nothing of the sort. The fact is, train sets are quite complex, come in several “scales,” and require the skill and manipulative hand/eye control of an adult in order to plan and assemble Some of these sets are very expensive and, when the hobbyists who put them together finish the job, the detail is remarkable, approaching museum-quality reproductions of the trains that once criss-crossed the nation.

As we said before, toy model trains are constructed upon a selection of scales The most common scale is HO, which corresponds to about .14 inches equaling 1 foot on a real train. This is a favorite scale since it satisfies a lot of normal requirements This size serves as a good compromise between the “O” size trains which are easier for young people to deal with, and the smaller, more intricate and highly detailed N, T, and Z scale trains. This allows a hobbyist to lay an impressive amount of track in a small area and to enjoy assembling an intricate and accurate landscape through which the train can travel. These trains, of course, do travel!

These Toy model trains are electrically driven. In most American models, this is a DC-direct current-flow which is much safer than the alternating current that emanates from wall sockets. The control mechanisms couldn’t be more simple. To go faster, one simply increases the amount of power being delivered to the train. To reverse direction, one reverses the polarity Of course, in keeping with the spirit of being a train engineer and not an electrical engineer, the controls are not marked in terms of the changes they make to the electric flow but, rather, according to the changes they make to the direction and speed of the train

Toy model trains come in various levels of complexity. Ready-to-Run trains are the simplest and the best ways to get young people involved in the hobby These trains are put together in the box and one simply assembles the track and gets them on their way”Shake the box” kits have just a little more complexity, not too much, but sufficient to allow you a degree a satisfaction in some simple assembly of the component parts. The “Craftsman kits” are the top of the line, most difficult and challenging projects. Only experienced model builders will want to tackle these kits, which require patience, knowledge and skill to produce what you would like to ultimately see on your layout.

Generally, you will find toy model train hobbyists began their love affair while still children themselves, and it carried over into their adulthood. While children may just appreciate the “cool” factor of the devices, adults oftentimes become more concerned with recreating history through their models and with making very accurate and detailed trains. Some of these creations can be worth a great deal of money. In particular, highly desirable models may include some rare trains in good working condition When you look around at different people’s sets, you will encounter some which are perfectly arranged to correspond with scale miles of track and include towns, depots, yards and switching areas, plus many more interesting and original facillities.
